Many students and parents ask my about the right time to take the SAT Exam. I always recommend to them that the SAT should be taken the same year as the student passes his 10th grade. We know that the validity of the SAT score is 5 years and the applications for UG Courses are sent while the student is in the 12th grade. There are various advantages of appearing in the SAT while the student is in the 11th grade.
All the mathematics chapters included in the SAT are almost the same as what the candidates study in the 9th and the 10th grades irrespective of the countries or boards. Hence, it makes a lot of sense to prepare and sit for the test while all the mathematics concepts are still fresh in their minds. SAT is conducted seven times a year across the world. If a student starts preparing immediately after the 10th board exams, he can utilize the break effectively.
At Global Course, we conduct intensive and regular SAT courses during June–December so students can comfortably take their SAT in October, November, or December. If they wish to improve their score, they can attempt again in March.
Further, the 11th grade curriculum is less demanding than the get more info 12th, making it easier to balance SAT Prep and academics. Attempting SAT in the 12th grade can be stressful due to heavier academic load.
My advice is to make one serious attempt, with a second attempt kept as a backup. Avoid making more than two attempts.
Taking the SAT early in the 11th grade provides more retake flexibility. If planning a retake, allow at least two months between attempts. Our remedial courses (6–8 weeks) often improve scores by 50–100 points.
In short, take a break after your 10th boards, start SAT Prep, attempt in August, and if needed, retake in December. Take multiple mock tests—we require at least 10 timed mocks, analyze them, and address weaknesses. Following this approach, our students have scored up to 1560/1600 in 2024.
